Do you want to give yourself a wonderful holiday in the Moroccan land and do not know which destination to choose? Essaouira is a magical city that deserves to be visited at least once in a lifetime.

Essaouira is a port and seaside city located on the Moroccan coast overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. The strongest attraction of this city is its wonderful medina which is located on the sea, so much so that it has become part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Essaouira was originally called Mogador, which means small fortress. The origin of this name derives from the fact that Essaouira is an important port that connects Morocco with the rest of Africa and Europe.

What to do and what to see in Essaouira

The tranquillity of the inhabitants of Essaouira, the white walls and the workshops of the craftsmen are the main features of this city.

One of the main attractions not to be missed is the Medina, which is an excellent example, due to its perfect conservation, of the European military architecture of the 1700s built in North Africa.

You can take long and pleasant walks along the characteristic streets, dominated by the white colour that is present throughout the city. Inside the Medina there are several architectural masterpieces.

Essaouira is a fishing town, in fact hundreds of boats return to the port every day with their freshly caught seafood and fish crops. A visit to the port will allow you to buy and taste excellent fish, or even just to admire the beauty of the fishermen's activities.

The Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah Museum is certainly worth a visit. This wonderful property is located in a residence dating back to 1800 and is located near the Skala of the Medina. Inside it is possible to appreciate a very precious collection of local handicrafts and, above all, of very particular musical instruments used on the spot.

Also worth seeing is the area of the Bastions which offers the most beautiful panoramic view of the city. In this place there are 19 cannons positioned. One of the main gates of the Bastioni is called "the door to the sea", precisely because of the particular view it offers on the ocean, absolutely suggestive.

Rue Mohammed el Qorry, a street lined with boutiques, shops and street food carts, is also worth a long walk. Here you can eat delicious local products such as msemmen, typical Moroccan bread, snail soup, lamb skewers, orange juice, cotton candy and prickly pears.

For the evening, the city offers a wide choice of local and typical restaurants, where you can taste the typical Moroccan cuisine, mainly based on fish. But many other activities can be done in this unique city.

Ranch de Diabat offers a wide range of activities to do in Essaouira, such as wonderful horseback riding, suggestive sunset tea rituals, camel rides or hiking. There is also the possibility of staying overnight, for those who want to spend dream nights under the stars of the African sky and enjoy the fresh breeze of the Atlantic Ocean.

Essaouira: surf, beach and port.

Being a seaside resort, Essaouira is a seaside resort and above all a favorite place for surfers.

Thanks to the wind present all year round, the ocean waves are in fact ideal for practicing this wonderful sport, which is increasingly popular especially among the youngest.

Essaouira is the ideal place for those looking for aquatic adventures. There are also several beaches more suitable for swimming and bathing, such as those of Tafedna, Azrou, Sidi Kaouki, Chict.

Opposite the port of Essaouira are the Mogador Islands. These islands are a nature reserve, inhabited mainly by hawks and seagulls.

In addition to the blue boats moored at the Essaouira pier, the fishermen are the real attraction of the place. They unload the fish, sell it on the stalls and fold the long red nets. The port of Essaouira is a very chaotic place, but it represents the true soul of the city with the smell of fresh fish, the sound of seagulls flying over the sea. The city beach is also the meeting place of local citizens, full of little ones who bathe in the sea. From the beach starts a walk that reaches the fortress of Borj el-Berod. This ancient fortress is partly covered in sand, but still accessible to visitors.

Essaouira Events 2022

Among the events in Essaouira in 2022, it is necessary to mention the 24th edition of the Gnaoua Essaouira Festival, in June 2022. Each year it is able to attract a varied and cosmopolitan audience, in order to showcase the Gnaoua heritage. The four-day festival features Gnaoua-style art and music exhibitions.

Essaouira is a wonderful place, an ideal tourist destination for those who love the sea, light-coloured architecture, good food, the tranquillity of the people and the days spent in this bright land. Essaouira is not very far from the beautiful city of Marrakech, easily reachable in just over two hours, which is undoubtedly worth visiting.
