6 days of horseback trekking in the Moroccan desert
If you are looking for an exceptional adventure in Morocco, this desert tour combines horseback rides and wonderful places to see, suitable for both solo travelers and groups.
The proposed equestrian trekking is divided into 2 stages:
- The journey begins in Tameghourte, a town located southeast of Zagora. This route offers the opportunity to explore the village of Ouled Driss, then continue through the impressive Draa palm grove. Here, you can admire the beauty of gardens arranged around Morocco’s historic castles, true jewels that emerge in the desert like precious gems.
- The second phase of our horseback trekking fully immerses us in the majesty of the desert landscapes, alternating between crossing vast areas now dominated by dunes (erg) and now by rocky formations (reg), offering unique views of the Sahara desert.
Beautiful landscapes to visit on this 6-day tour in the Moroccan desert
This trekking in Morocco offers the uniqueness of galloping across vast stretches of sand, walking alongside your Arabian-Berber horse, and reaching the summit of Jebel Bani for a breathtaking panoramic view of the plain below. The horseback trekking tour in the desert also includes crossing the Oued Draa river, vital for the local cultivation of date palms and watermelons, a central element for the life of the small villages scattered throughout the region. Our route will also take us through Tuareg villages, witnesses to the ancient routes of the legendary Paris-Dakar.
Ranch de Diabat: Morocco trips organized with exploration and adventure in mind
Each day will be full of new things to do; we will ride through the spectacular desert landscapes, where the heat of the sun gradually gives way to the coolness of the evening, under a sky adorned with a shining moon and stars so close they seem almost within reach. These moments, combined with the magic of the desert scenery, will make your horseback trekking an unforgettable memory, enriched by photographs that capture the essence of your journey. Our offer also includes all-inclusive Morocco holiday packages, allowing you to explore the wonders of this land through tours of Essaouira or Morocco tours, ideal for longer stops.
Program
Day 1 Saturday: Arrival in Morocco
Book a flight arriving in Marrakech or Agadir early in the morning, no later than 10 AM, or in Ouarzazate no later than 5 PM, and we will put you in contact with your travel companions to organize a private taxi from your arrival airport to Zagora, where we will be waiting for you.
On this day, meals, transfer, and hotel are not included, but we will be by your side to organize the logistics together by grouping all participants to share travel expenses.
In Zagora, the hotel next to where the horses will be is Oasis di Tilogui; in this booking, we can also assist you in arranging twin or triple rooms (women with women and men with men or couples alone or mixed groups of friends depending on the case).
Day 2 - 7 Sunday - Friday: Between rides in the Zagora desert and fortified villages
At 10:00 AM we meet at the base camp, where our Arabian and Berber horses await us, near the Hotel Oasis de Tilogui. After an initial briefing and the assignment of the most suitable horse to each rider, an unforgettable adventure of horse trekking in the Sahara Desert begins, following the tracks of the ancient Tuareg caravans.
Every day we will cover about 25 km on horseback, alternating walk, trot, and gallop between morning and afternoon, with a lunch break organized by our support staff. The logistics truck carries luggage and equipment, allowing us to enjoy the journey with total freedom.
Our cook will prepare fresh and varied dishes every day, suitable also for those following vegetarian diets or with specific dietary needs, such as celiac disease or allergies.
At sunset we will reach the itinerant bivouac, set up by our team in the heart of the desert. We will find comfortable tents with rugs and mattresses, as well as a hot shower and toilets, to experience the Sahara authentically without giving up essential comfort.
During this horseback journey in Morocco we will cross nomad villages, ancient oases, and the historic caravan route that led to Timbuktu. We will ride among golden dunes that change color with the daylight and climb the majestic Jebel Bani, from which opens a spectacular view over the valley and the vastness of the desert.
At the end of these six days of horse riding in the Sahara, we will carry with us much more than just a trip: the silence of the desert, the encounter with the Tuareg culture, and that deep feeling many simply call Africa syndrome.
Day 7 Friday: end of trekking and night in hotel
We will arrive at the end of this fantastic trekking at lunchtime, returning to the base camp where we will settle the horses, then we will have half a day free to rest.
On this day the hotel will not be included; we recommend staying at the Oasis de Tilogui, which is near the base camp. We can also assist you with booking twin or triple rooms (women with women and men with men, or couples alone, or mixed groups of friends depending on the case).
We will organize the last dinner together to say goodbye and relive this wonderful experience, either at the hotel if you are all staying there, or at the base camp.
Day 8 Saturday: Departure
We recommend booking a late evening flight if you are departing from Marrakech, Agadir, or Ouarzazate, so you have time to reach these locations.
This transfer is not included, but once we receive the flight booking of each participant, we can arrange private shuttles to share the costs among you and provide our best advice for transportation.
Notes
For those of you wishing to extend your holiday and return via Marrakech, a tailored quote will be offered to suit your needs.
This type of trekking ventures into extremely rural areas, where water is a very precious and rare resource - our staff will do their best to ensure a daily supply for showers, but we rely on your sense of responsibility to avoid waste and your full understanding should water not be found in the wells.
Useful information
Maximum weight
Maximum allowed weight 90kg (the organization reserves the right to refuse participation in the trekking to anyone who does not declare their actual weight if it exceeds the limit, and no refund will be provided. The health of the horses is the priority)
